Have you ever been unable to explain what Jesus is doing? How do you respond?
As we continue to look at the miracles of Jesus that are recorded in the gospel of John, today we’re looking at Jesus walking on water.
This story is told in much more detail in Matthew. John, however, only records a brief account of this amazing miracle., with a specific focus on Jesus himself. John 6:16-21 recounts the story with the disciples leaving to go across the Sea of Galilee. Jesus was going to join them and after they were a few miles off shore, they saw Jesus coming toward them walking on the water. They were frightened, then Jesus spoke to them and then the disciples let him in the boat.
I find it so intriguing at the difference in the disciples from verse 19 to verse 21. In verse 19 the disciples are frightened and not knowing what to do. In verse 21 the disciples were welcoming him into the boat. What caused that change?
Verse 20 holds the answer: “But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.”
Such a simple, short verse, yet one that was enough to create a complete change in the response of the disciples. Jesus had just walked across the water to the boat. The disciples had never seen that before and didn’t know what to do or how to respond. Jesus reminded them that even in the midst of their uncertainty, He is the same. He is always the same. Our fears and our doubts do not change who He is. He is the same and because of who He is, we do not need to be afraid.
What are we going through that is causing us to be afraid? Do we see or recognize Jesus working in the midst of our circumstances, even if He’s doing something that we don’t understand? So often we, like the disciples, become afraid when we can’t explain exactly what Jesus is doing. Yet He tells us that even in the midst of his miracles, that He is there and we can trust in Him. We do not need to be afraid. Open our eyes and our hearts and be willing to allow Him to come in and work in and through our situations.
