Last week we began looking at the women who are mentioned in Hebrews chapter 11, the Hall of Faith. Sarah was the first one that we looked and only one other woman is mentioned by name in this prestigious listing. As we celebrate Mother’s Day today, we take a look at the prostitute Rahab.
Hebrews 11:31—By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed the spies, was not killed with those who were disobedient.
The story of Rahab is told in Joshua chapter 2. The Israelites sent spies into the promised land to scout out the area and report back. Rahab lived in the city of Jericho which the Israelites planned to attack and defeat. These spies were taken in and protected by Rahab even though they were technically her enemy. Why did she do that? In that chapter, she tells the spies that she has heard about all that God had done Israel and she knew that God would help them to win against her town of Jericho. She believed God and wanted to be saved.
She had only heard about who God was and what He had done for others, she hadn’t experienced it for herself yet. But, she knew that she wanted that for herself and her family so she was willing to risk herself to welcome these spies into her home. She welcomed them on faith that their God was exactly as she had heard about him. She welcomed these people based on faith and as a result of her courageous act of faith, she is remembered and recognized among the great people of faith.
We’ve heard and seen what God has done in others, do we have faith that God will do these things for us as well? Are we willing to risk ourselves based on our faith? As we seek to be women of faith, we see that it is not the big things that God recognizes, but the simple acts of faith that show that we desire Him above everything else, known and unknown.
On this Mother’s Day, whether you are a mother or not, whether your mother is still living or not, seek today to be a woman whose faith is based on the simple belief that what God has for you is infinitely better than anything else possible.
